Acrylic on canvas, 36×40”. I painted a sketch at the edge of the woods at my home (at the time) in Cleveland County, NC. In the sketch there was an opening, and when the sketch was being translated into this larger piece, the opening seemed to need some activity. It made sense to add a deer, because we would see deer there on a regular basis. Somehow the figure of a girl reaching out to the deer came into view there in the marks on my canvas, and it became a scene that I was very excited about. You know how it is, when you see a deer and you wish you could go and pet it but you know its not possible…But in a painting anything is possible.
